Sports Drinks vs. Water Sports drinks have established a dominating position in the exercise world. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on media advertisements and athlete endorsements every year. The simple fact that many sports stars promote the use of rehydrating sports drinks leads the consumer to believe that such drinks must be more replenishing than just plain old water. If basketball superstars Kevin Garnett and Dwight Howard “bleed Gatorade”, doesn’t that make it true? The fact is the consumption of water to hydrate the body is just as replenishing and healthier than sports drinks. Although sports drinks do offer advantages to high-performance athletes who exercise for at least 60 to 90 minutes at a time,…show more content…

Water also makes exercise safer by regulating body temperature and reducing cardiovascular stress. For moderate workouts under an hour, water is all that is needed because the body has enough stored energy to function safely. Instead of filling up on sports drinks, a healthy post-workout meal is a far better choice to replenish lost minerals and nutrients. According to a study performed by M. Van Nieuwenhoven, a member of the Department of Gastroenterology at the University Hospital Maastricht in the Netherlands, it was concluded that, “… sports drinks used during an 18-km run in cool environmental conditions do not support the performance better than mineral water. The use of sports drinks during an 18 kilometer run leads to a higher incidence of both upper and lower gastrointestinal complaints compared to water.” (284). Nieuwenhoven’s study included ninety-eight well trained subjects that were tested over an eight day period using three different drinks, included water. This study shows that water not only has equal replenishing properties to the body, but does not contain harmful additives that can cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Along with these studies that show intestinal consequences to consumption of sports drinks, dentists have preformed their own studies. In a study published in the Journal of Dentistry and written by Dr. Susan Hooper, it was found that “the sports drink caused significantly more [tooth] erosion than water…” (344). Since

Gatorade Vs. Water Essay

Is it in you? Have you ever wondered if Gatorade really gives you a competitive edge over H2O (water) in an athletic event or while training? I’ve seen countless commercials and have always pondered the thought; can this sports drink really give you the edge you need? I mean, professional athletes from Michel Jordan to Tiger Woods have endorsed this drink and given it the reputation is has today. I myself was a believer that water was better than Gatorade until I wrote this paper. Now I believe that Gatorade has far more nutritional value than water, because it provides essential minerals, carbohydrates and electrolytes.

Early summer, about forty-eight years ago in 1965, University of Florida assistant football coach, Dwayne Douglas, sat down and wondered why so many of his players were suffering from heat strokes and heat related illnesses during games or practice. So, he went to the university physicians and asked them to determine why this was happening. Not long after it was discovered that two key factors were causing the Florida Gator players to suffer from these conditions: the fluids and electrolytes the players were losing during the events were not being put back into the body, and the massive amounts of carbohydrates the players' bodies used for energy were not being replenished. So, he decided to create Gatorade. There are plenty of Gurus out there who will sit and tell you that water is natural and it’s the best thing you could ever put into your body, but let’s get real I’ll take scientifically proven research over someone’s “word” any day. (Rovell 58)

So, this begs the question, what is Gatorade? Gatorade is the name of a popular sports drink that is often consumed and endorsed by athletes who are taking part in extreme physical activities. This drink contains electrolytes that are not produced by the body, such as, potassium, sodium, as well as a plethora of carbohydrates. According to the National Athletic Training Association, carbohydrates in a sports drink should not compromise more than 8% of the content in the drink. The sodium that is found in Gatorade helps the body replenish the fluids that are lost through a strenuous workout. Drinking water is just enough to keep the human body hydrated before, during and after a moderate or lightexercise session. However, if one is taking action in a high volume, intense sport session for a long period of time, or in a high-temperature environment, it is recommended that they drink Gatorade. The carbohydrates in the sports drink Gatorade can help replace glycogen that is lost during massive amounts of physical activities. The American College of Sports Medicine suggests that the use of carbohydrate replacement in Gatorade an hour or more after they have completed a high intensity physical activity or a low intensity activity that lasts for more than an hour. The best thing to do is to use a combination of water and Gatorade. Not long after this researchers introduced...
