Creativity: Definition & Importance
Creativity is the ability to join ideas together in a unique way or to make uncommon connections between ideas. Creativity allows individuals to develop different ideas and methods to use when approaching tasks and problems. Most individuals have creative potential, however many do not know how to access it. Creative individuals possess traits that others do not. These traits can include independence, confidence, positive self-evaluation, problem solving skills, and perseverance . These skills have become increasingly important in organizations in today’s Information Age.
Creativity is an important aspect of any organization. Individuals who think creatively allow organizations to become privy to new ideas and innovations. Organizations lacking in creative individuals are missing out on opportunities for innovation. In today’s business world, creative individuals are valuable in organizations. With the ambiguity in financial markets and high levels of global competition, many organizations only survive due to individual creativity being used to facilitate innovation within the organization . Creativity allows an individual to have a competitive advantage over another individual .
Creativity: Personal Case Analysis
Through personal experience, creativity has proven to be a fundamental aspect of business, especially marketing management. As a marketing management student, creativity is a skill asset that must continuously improved upon as new technologies, inventions, and ideas appear every day. As many university students have the opportunity to complete their degree with cooperative education, having an advantage such as proven individual creativity is extremely important to stand out among other candidates. After completion of the creativity test, “How Creative Am I?” , I realized that my creativity levels are not as high as they should be if I want to possess a creative competitive advantage over others. Improvements towards my personal creativity need to be implemented.
Improving Creativity
After taking the creativity test, my personal creativity needs further development and improvement. The three-component model of creativity suggests that personal creativity is a combination of expertise, creativity skills, and task motivation1. Expertise of work is the fundamental framework for all creative ideas. Having superior knowledge of creativity requires research and exploration on the subject. In order to improve my creativity, I must research the subject of creativity and learn how to reach my creative potential.
Creativity skills combine attitude and personality characteristics that are relevant and associated with a creative mindset. Referring to Appendix A, these personality characteristics are listed (2, 4, 6, 10, 1-17, 20-24, 26, 29-30)4 in the creativity test. Creativity skills are also associated with individual mood. Nowadays creativity and innovation are becoming extremely important to the success of all business organizations; because they are facing major and rapid changes in the environment. To cope effectively with the change, organizations must become more innovative, developing the ability to quickly plan and implement adoptions to change their environments.

There flashes of inspiration are fleeting and can be lost quickly if not documented. In other words, creative thoughts do not keep a particular schedule. They might come to you at any time of day or night.

e) Verification: Insights are merely rough ideas. Their usefulness still requires verification through conscious evaluation and experimentation. Therefore the last step involves testing the solution or ideas. The creator seeks corroboration and acceptance of the new approach.

This process can lead to various types of creativity.

 Innovation or an original approach to approach to a problem: Innovation involves seeing the obvious before anyone else does.
 Extension; which involves expanding an idea to another application.
 Duplication; or the copying of good ideas from others; which is the simplest form of creative thought.
Types of Creative People:
The type of creative people also differs like the types of creativity. There are two types of creative people;
-Adaptors
-Innovators
