The full-length title of this article should be 10 ways the Internet and the smartphone have changed the way we live - as humans and customers - and how businesses must evolve to improve their customer experience and survive the digital transformation.
We all recognize mobile technology as the real game-changer in the creation of the world as we experience it today. The hidden truth, though, is that there would be no smartphone without the Internet revolution. We are the result of this revolution.
We can start with one simple question: Can you imagine your life without the Internet? Just close your eyes for a moment and think about what life was before the web. You can barely remember that time if you were born and grew up before the Internet. If you are a digital native, this task is simply impossible.
Millennials - also known as digital customers - will never experience a world with no connectivity and mobile devices. Yes, there are still (small) areas of our planet not wired and cabled but - at least for us living in developed countries - it is hard to imagine a life before Google, Amazon, Apple or Facebook.
If you search on Google (where else!), you will find tons of experiments or researches about life without the Internet. They all come down to one single definitive truth: "I cannot even imagine my life without the Internet or the smartphone. It is an integral part of who I am." (Gallup)
The Internet is still relatively young (it just celebrated its 26th birthday in 2015) and yet the connectivity has already produced long-lasting effects. It all started with a cable plugged into the phone line, and now we possess the entire world in the palm of our hand.
There is one exact moment that changed things forever, and that was when the Internet came out of our home, held inside a small box called smartphone.
According to the Internet Trends Report 2015 by Mary Meeker, we have reached 2.8 billion connected people in the world. In other words, almost 40% of the worldwide population is now online, at home and on mobile devices.
Every single activity of our daily life is influenced by connected existence:
- More than 27 million pieces of content are shared every day;
- More than 600 million websites are online;
- More than 500 million Tweets are sent every day,
- More than 30 billion pieces of content are shared on Facebook each month;
- More than 5 billion items have been sold on Amazon in 2014, with 40% of those sold by third-party sellers.
What is true for people is, even more, true for organizations. The way you do business today is completely different from the best practices taken for granted only a decade ago. All certainties suddenly disappeared, washed away from a stream of connectivity. The Internet has brought treats but also huge opportunities, for those able to respond timely and unlock the power of emerging technologies.
The years pass by, but the rules of the competition remain the same: you succeed only if you can understand what is going on, if you adapt to the evolution of technology and behaviors, and if you answer to the unprecedented demands of new customers. Business and technology go hand in hand, and so does the customer experience.
Any analysis of how life has changed may look like a trip down memory lane, but it also helps you understand where we are all headed for as human beings, customers, and organizations. So, here are the 10 ways the Internet has changed (and will keep changing) the way we live.
Where do you go when you are collecting information about a product or looking for an answer? Google, of course. The Internet has become the primary source of information, and search engines the main door to access it. Thanks to the smartphone, you have the complete knowledge in your pocket. Education, essays, product comparison, self-improvement tips, technical details, diets, do it yourself, lolcats, the Internet has it all. If you are a brand, you need to be there with meaningful contents.
Do you still remember phone calls and letters? We have witnessed a complex evolution in the way we connect with other people and with companies. First came the chat rooms and forums, then - especially after the spread of smartphones - social networks and online communities. Face to face communication is still important but we increasingly rely on wide circles of strangers to decide what to do and what to buy. In the mobile era, communication is about building networks.
The success of Amazon, eBay, and online marketplaces says that visiting the physical location of a store is no longer mandatory if you want to make a purchase. Shopping for a particular item looks like a journey across channels: you can see a product in the store, search for information online, compare prices between retailers, make the purchase in-app and pick it up at the store. The disruption of the retail industry always implies the renovation of the retail customer experience.
Not so long ago, the essence of travel was the idea of discovery. Is it still? Today, you can know everything about a place even before leaving home. And planning has never been so easy and cheap: You have websites for information, mobile apps for real-time discount and offers, virtual reality for a full 3D immersion. Even when you are there, mobile technology is there for you: Uber for affordable transfers, Airbnb for cheap stays, Google Maps to find the way, TripAdvisors for gourmet restaurants. Who needs travel agencies anymore?
Remember when you had to visit the video store to rent a VHS, hoping that the movie you were looking for was not taken already? That is the past. With the Internet, you have everything you need in one place, and rarely you need something physical (i.e. a Dvd) to enjoy it. With the emergence of smart TVs and the new generation of gaming consoles, all you need is a connection, be it movie streaming (Netflix), music (Spotify), the sports experience or on-demand personalized contents.
Once upon a time, people had to visit the bank to check the most basic financial operations. That was before the dawn of online banking, before the disintermediation. Before the ‘Uberization’ of retail banking. Technology trends have forced traditional institutions to face the challenge of evolution, transforming generic accounts into actual human beings. What they must do now is to stop focusing on products and money and start caring about the retail banking customer experience. In the name of innovation (mobile wallets, one-touch payments) and personalization.
You do not need to know someone to love him/her. You do not need to feel the pressure of playing all your cards in a few minutes while waiting for the bus. Now you can find the love your life - or at least meet new friends - by simply downloading an app and filling out a profile. Be it dating or building professional relationships, there is a place for you online. This evolution has consequences for businesses: people now rely on a wider circle of trust, other people they barely know that can influence their decisions, one way or another.
In the Internet age, everyone is a doctor. While you should not trust what you read online, when you feel symptoms of some sort, it is undeniable that technology has changed the medical experience and the relationship between doctors and patients. On the one hand we have the risk of misleading information; on the other hand, the emerging awareness that mobile devices can improve the quality of life and help prevent diseases. Wearables technology is the main driver of the self-tracking obsession; connected with health platforms (HealthKit), they will shape the future of healthcare.
When the way we communicate changes, marketing techniques change accordingly. If you try to employ traditional marketing ideas to today’s world, you will soon recognize they are outdated and inefficient. The reason is simple: customers have changed, their purchase behavior have changed. Even when they are in the store, they go online to compare products. The success of proximity marketing is due to the need (for companies) to engage customers with context aware contents, and delight them with meaningful and personalized experiences.
Do you really need to spend eight hours a day in the office to be productive? Twenty years ago, this questions made no sense at all. Of course, you needed to be there. Today things are different, and it is all about the Internet. The evolution of web-based tools and the growth of cloud services have made the physical co-presence unnecessary. We live and work in an ecosystem of constant connectivity, and this is bringing employers and governments to a complete change of perspective, in the name of flexibility. To improve quality of life and cut inefficiency.

Technology has changed our lives by increasing the speed of time. We were human. We invented and developed the technologies to change our life to its best. Now that technology is changing our lives every second.
Robots are our new human model and at the end, only robots control this world. Technology is now trying to go inside our body it’s almost there and the target is human blood and emotions. So, far! Technology is successful in that.
In business, the use of Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing, machine learning, predictive analytics and business intelligence tools, applications now creating new methods to conduct, operate and manage the business.
The rise of cloud computing, cloud storage, Artificial intelligence and Machine learning is the example, that we will be soon on the node that connects our body and capture the data of human activities in real time.
Invention and development of Technology have changed our life positively and negatively. The new technologies and inventions are results of our curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving techniques.
What else we will do on this earth if we’re not improving our self every day. But it’s important that technological development should be environmental and human-friendly. Technology is a flower for life, not a productivity killer.
We’re looking like a robotic human and it’s the biggest example of how technology has changed our lives positively and negatively.
Technology is in the air, water, food, education, business, office, electricity, marketing, data storage, communication, cars, parking, travelling, foods, shopping, and banks etc. It’s almost everywhere and in everything that is involved in our daily life.
Technology is the king and human is a slave. But if a slave is clever, knowledgeable enough then they can manipulate the king (technologies).
Do you know when you get up in the morning what you think? For example: How to improve my writing? How to market products, how to earn more money, how to live the life you want to live, how to achieve your goals and dreams and how to make this world better. These are things in which technologies help us.
And for you, there are thousands of businesses and people ready to help you on the internet. You have to search and get. They are selling you change product on the internet and everywhere. Almost all the companies talk about change in their advertisement. They use technologies to target you.
E.g. How to change the world by following 7 habits? How to change your life in 30 days? How to get 1000 visitors to your business website by buying this or that. What is that? That is the impact of technology on our thinking, communication, habits and social activities. We depend on technologies to help us. And technologies really help us in good and bad ways.
How technology has changed our lives, let’s learn in following points:
1. Technology has changed the education:-
Technology changed the ways of education and learning methods. We are not able in the past to get data, information, and knowledge so quickly with flexibility. The school was very far from home. We learned that was not interesting in certain ways.
But today because of technology there are online schools. Anyone can do degrees online by using internet and computers. There are various types of online courses for everyone with different contents. This is how has technology changed the education. It is a positive change.
Even after machine learning, it’s highly possible that robots and machines start contributing to training people.
2. Technology changed the ways of communication
Today we have mobile, internet, computer and social media, video conferencing tools, and mobile apps to communicate with anyone around the world. It was not possible in the past. The benefit of communication change is that it’s fast, easy and quickest method to communicate.
In past, a letter takes 10 days to reach the destination such as money order, greeting cards, personal letter and thousands of others communication sources are not fast enough.
But technologies changed that now you can send an email. You can transfer the money from your mobile phone. This is technology and it’s non-stop.
3. New kind of habits and addictions:-
With technology changes, we got new kind of habits and it’s tough for parents to solve such kind of problems. It’s because they don’t know the solutions. Most of the kids, teens are addicted to the internet. For them, technology is a toy. This can be a good change, but what about creativity and their brain development.
Is artificial intelligence is the new tool of creativity? I don’t think so. And after 20 years, the Internet will be boring for them. Then they will use robots for their works as today we’re using internet or Google.
4. Lifestyle changes that happened after the use of technology:-
Technology has a positive and negative impact on our daily life. Today we live more appearance filled the life. The craze and disadvantages of taking selfies in the risky area are well known. We do online shopping and there are varieties and price comparison tools.
Technologies have internet of things that anyone can use in their daily life. We are busier than productive. 30 years ago people have time for friends and families. They live and enjoy their life in real time. At the same time, they are emotional, care nature and humanity.
Today, we do same things on social media but without emotions. This is the technological effect. And we’re responsible for this change. It’s is good or bad, depends on the users, how they’re using it.

5. Technology has changed our health:-
Technology has increased the pace of our life, but the quality is reduced. Technology impacted our life positively and negatively. Today we have more health care technologies then past. But the reason, behind the inventions of health technologies, is the overuse of technology in daily life.
In old times people have less electric equipment for house and field work. In old time people physical stamina is better than today’s fitness freaks.
They lived their life longer without technology but today after technology the average human age is reducing. We’re greedy and we want more, faster and in fewer efforts.
That’s why business God is selling air purifier, mineral waters more confidently other than inspiring humans to plant trees and grow natural sources. Even after the technological development in medical science, doctors are not confident in sayings about the life is safe for a patient after operation in certain cases.
6. Our critical thinking skills are almost dead:-
Today most of the people do not invent, they do business to solve people problem. They can sell anything and every human being is targeted, customers. They are collecting data, what you search, where you click, what you buy, how you react to certain copywriter’s text. This is impacting our life because they are creating products based on our search results and technologies habits.
All are doing searches, everyone wants to read the easy explanation, people don’t have time to think, and they do searches. Why think? When there are search engines who give even instant suggestions to search this or that.
We‘re not able to think critically that’s why we are inventing artificial intelligence for future generation. The positive is we can get knowledge and information and data by using technology. But the negative is too much data, overload of information and overuse of technology equipment making us addict to the tech tools.
We can’t analyze, understand easily without seeing visual examples. This is how I think technology is impacting our critical thinking.
In old times (My childhood) No tuition classes anything, everyone read and learn based on their power of the brain. Today, even admitting kids in the best schools they need tuitions and extra classes. Why? Might be subjects and syllabus is advanced that’s why they need technologies in the classroom.

It was not in the past. People live without less tension. They have less tension than today’s humans. Today’s robotic humans are more tensioned and fighting with analysis paralysis problems.
Today, people think and analyze everything because today we’re living more risky life. We’re at the speed of filling greed store and technology is the tools and root.
7. Technology is making difference in between business processes and systems:-
Latest information technologies are impacting our work and in the way we do business. Almost everything soon will be automated. New business models are technology based. I don’t think there is a single business around the world that is not using technologies.
People are thinking more about passive incomes and more than one source of income in fewer human efforts. That’s why cloud computing, marketing automation, cloud storage, hybrid cars, and robots etc. very soon start changing this world again.
The reason is more profit in less time and without humans. It is because everyone is in hurry to end the journey before competitors.
But then next problem will come. There are already millions of people around the world in different countries are facing unemployment problem. And after the use of such new technologies, the unemployment problem will grow even more.
That’s why new generation especially people in between 18th to 30th need practical computer science or technologies related knowledge to get a job after degree.
But what are the solutions in that time? The solution is simple then again someone from us will create next technology for them. It continues the process, I don’t know when and where it ends.
8. Cloud computing technology and cloud storage are another change that is happening currently:-
I think you know about it. Now you don’t have to store your personal and business data on your hard drive, pen drive or DVDs. You can upload it to clouds and access anywhere, anytime.
Such as Google Drive and one drive. You don’t need to buy the business application and have to spend time on installing on your computer and server. It’s already on the cloud, in which you and your employees can use it anytime from anywhere.
But why cloud computing? because we want to earn money with fewer efforts. And business owners want to solve day to day maintenance problems in the company that’s why it is now growing in the internet market.
Here you can learn more about it: –Benefits of cloud computing for business.
9. The negative and positive impact of technology on workplace productivity:-
Now it’s clear that technology affects our work habits. We want productivity and it’s great for business.
Technology has changed our daily business. You can measure the quality of your products and services. You can speed up the production process. You can reduce your marketing cost by using online marketing automation applications. You can sell products on the internet and can get money in the bank directly. You can research the market, you can analyze your competitors, you can learn about technological equipment.
And such technological changes in business will reduce your production cost and increase profit. Using communication technology you can do video conferencing, chats, online meetings etc.
Here you can learn more:Advantages of internet for business.
Above productivity example, by the use of technologies, you can apply in the workplace that not only decrease cost, time and labour but increase the quality of the product. So, you can fight with your competitors based on quality, speed, and price.
The negative of technologies in business productivity is only when you’re not using correctly.
For example, if you or your employees are busy in watching YouTube videos and using Facebook in office time then it will reduce the productivity level at some point. If you have more IT infrastructure or fewer quality products then its cost you time.
Another negative is that these new technologies are more advanced and highly practical. If you don’t have enough budget, knowledge and don’t know how to implement a particular technology in your business then it will be risky.
But generally, I don’t think anything is negative to use technologies in the workplace. The best technologies with technically sound staff have not any productivity loss.
10. Technology has changed the behaviours and upgraded the human greed.
We are losing our patience. Our behaviour is changed in a second. For example, if the internet is slow then you can see your face how it is. If someone is late to reply, then see your reaction.
Technologies changed our patience level from high to low. As I explained above that in old time’s people have more patience than today. We behave very badly for small things e.g. to the people who are less technical and don’t have high-quality mobile and money.
We changed our mind after seeing likes and comments. We stop doing the most important work when we get new notification or message. That’s how we are now affected by technology.
We are searching for friends on the internet. But don’t know about neighbours and their problems. We are sharing thousands of motivational and life quotes on the internet. But no one is taking a care of animals, plants, water and nature.
Yes, we can buy mineral water! But why buy the things when they are free? But who cares about the natural resources? Is there are any government in India or any country spending their high budget on natural resources?
Not that many, you can count on fingers. They are spending on industrialisation. Do you know why? Because they have great minds who think that industrialisation can reduce the unemployment.
But the truth is industrialisation can give them more money other than natural resources. And also working in such companies is like a GULAMI. And our institutions are teaching, How to become better Gulam. And you know the truth that after spending 4-5 lacs, you’re not able to get 10000. This is the truth.
This can be the reasons, why engineers are doing suicide? Why employees working in the IT companies, are frustrated from their job?
While I think government investment in nature will give a great return, and the returns are clean water, less pollution, fresh air.
Our youth have the power to develop and invent technologies that the world will follow for the right cause. But youth need the freedom to choose the subject and they want practical teachers.
But who cares about the talent? Even our society is influenced by Bhakts on the Internet, mobile messages and technologies. Election Commission is an external examiner for politicians. Then who cares? No matter if criminals are giving the exams (fighting election). What will society do in this changing world? I don’t know.
But I think if society is well educated about the technologies then it will be great. But in our society, every third person that you meet know about the politics, they even able to criticize PM and CM. If our society and social leaders spend some time to learn and educate about the technologies to common people then our India will grow fast. After the knowledge of technologies, we can be number 1 in many things.
But our society is influenced by Politicians more than technologies. But soon, our society will be educated then we have developed the country. I and you can help to educate society about such technologies.
I have more to say but let it be, I know you’re not interested! And we can’t find a solution here. But implementing technologies in political structures can be a solution especially in India.
Following are some articles related to technologies and country
16 ways that you can follow to be a good citizen.
Internet impact on the society
We‘re now more addicted to technologies, not a productive use. We don’t use technology based on our work, home, business, and job duties. We use whenever, whatever it is, no matter it is doing loss.
Such above changes are greed or human behaviours and technology speed up the process of corruption, data privacy and security to solve it and to improve it.
Technology is always depending on user and it will be. I hope and believe that our computer scientist or scientist from various fields created the control button of technologies. Else, you can imagine the future.
11. Technology is influencing youth:-
The youth is totally depending on the technology for everything. Even from school. A small information or practical knowledge is not produced by the teachers in the class but by the use of the internet.
Technology is making children older. They are learning and watching the things those were not possible to watch 25 years ago. This is how technology is affecting our youth negatively.
Our youth is ready to fight on social media but unable to run on the road and even can’t able to take a bucket of water in the home. But on the internet, he/she is not less than the army. This is positive or negative?
Youth patriotism is well known on the internet and at the same time, some of these people don’t care to save water, clean atmosphere and girl’s safety.
There are so many positive of technologies. And its technology that has increased career opportunities for the youth. Anyone with some sort of skill can start an online business. They can become a programmer, designer and able to provide services remotely.
Technology has a positive and negative impact but it’s really important for our teachers, teaching in colleges and schools of computer science to teach them productive and environment-friendly uses of technologies.
12. Future is unpredictable for small business owners:-
Technology changed the speed of time. Now technology is updating every second. It’s tough to for small business owners and entrepreneurs to run their business with this speed.
Technology connected the countries on one platform. It’s not hyperbole if you say that technology has changed this world into a village. The village in which most powerful people rule the other such as artificial intelligence has changed this world and in future, it is growing at double speed. That way it is tough, but not impossible for small business owners to become powerful and successful in business.
They only need knowledge and courage to implement their ideas with full dedication and hard work. Because technology is not limited to powerful it’s also for common too. If he/she knows how to use it and have tech guide.
Tech powers are collected by big companies and then changing the world where ever they want to move it.
The most powerful people in this world are those who have knowledge, wealth and the support of people. Anyone can become powerful by gaining knowledge, earning wealth by doing business and helping people in solving their problems. I think that is possible by the use of technologies.
But technology is like a fuel for big companies. They have ideas, knowledge and they are creating new tech solutions. They are earning money by collecting data from internet users, and they hire great talents.
That’s why the power is collected by only big companies. After that, they are manufacturing driverless cars. They are building robots. Investing in cloud computing etc. And they have the power to change the world. They can do anything.
But nothing is permanent neither we nor our technologies. We all are human, but our thinking is inspired by technologies. That’s why I call it robotic human.
Don’t allow technology to control you, make a technological decision those are helpful for low-income people and have positive effects on the environment.
Sorry for that if anything hurt you in this article, I just mean to share my technical feelings.
That’s it! What I know about the technologies. What do you think?
